About
Exportadora de Sal, S.A. de C.V. (ESSA) is the largest saltworks in the world, located in Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur (Mexico). Founded in 1954, the company has more than 70 years of experience producing salt through solar evaporation of seawater, across an area of approximately 33,000 hectares. Since February 2024, ESSA has been a state-owned entity with 100% Mexican capital, under the coordination of the Ministry of Economy. The company is led by its General Manager, Lic. Moisés Poblanno.
Its facilities include its own shipping port on Isla de Cedros (Baja California), capable of loading vessels of up to 180,000 tonnes, from which it exports to countries such as China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. The site lies within the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, an area of outstanding environmental value recognised for its wetlands, migratory birds, and as a breeding ground for the grey whale. ESSA employs more than 1,200 people across Guerrero Negro and Isla de Cedros.
With a production capacity exceeding 8 million tonnes per year and an average purity above 99.7% sodium chloride, ESSA produces industrial sea salt — used in the chlor-alkali industry, water treatment, water softening, and road de-icing — as well as food-grade sea salt. The company holds ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, HACCP, Kosher, and FSSC 22000 certifications.
